Me in My Greek Fisherman's Hat
Me in My Greek Fisherman's Hat
Oil on paper board
+/- 16x12 inches, matted
1996

Very early, exceedingly rare self-portrait, marking a pivotal moment. How so? One year previously, I'd taken the monumental step of leaving my first husband, the poet Irving Layton, the age difference finally having taken its toll. I started teaching myself to oil paint in October, 1995. In March, 1996, I began trying to sketch Irving's portrait, as he appears in the iconic Sam Tara photo. It didn't work. I decided to go for a self-portrait instead, albeit wearing Irving's trademark hat. Glad I did. Still have the hat. Thrilled that it survived all this time, and has found its forever home.
